Sleighs on the Bay: La Posada’s Lighted Boat Parade

Every December, as cool coastal breezes roll across North Padre Island, something magical begins to unfold along the canals. Boats transform into floating holiday displays, neighbors gather along docks and patios, and the entire island lights up for one of its most cherished traditions: the La Posada Boat Parade, hosted by the La Posada Foundation. What began as a small neighborhood gathering has grown into one of the Coastal Bend’s most anticipated events, with boaters decorating their vessels in dazzling lights and families lining the canals to watch the glowing procession drift by. For many island residents, it marks the official start of the holiday season.

The parade winds through various sections of Padre Island over two evenings, giving everyone a chance to participate. This year, the Friday Night La Posada Lighted Boat Parade will take place on December 12, 2025, beginning at 7 p.m. at the JFK Bridge before making its way through the North Canals. The festivities continue on Saturday, December 13, 2025, when the parade returns for a second night. Saturday’s route begins at the Caravel Boat Ramp at 6 p.m. and proceeds through the South Canals, bringing the celebration to the opposite side of the island. Each route offers its own unique atmosphere, and many families attend both nights to fully experience the event.

While the lights and decorations make the parade unforgettable, the true heart of the event is the La Posada Foundation’s annual holiday toy drive. Residents donate new, unwrapped toys throughout the season, and island restaurants, small businesses, and schools set up festive collection bins to help support the effort. Many canal-front homes also participate by hosting toy drop-off spots or passing donations directly to the collector boat as it travels the parade route. The impact has been substantial: in 2024, the La Posada toy drive gathered over 8,000 toys throughout the Corpus Christi area, an increase from approximately 7,800 the previous year, with an ambitious goal of exceeding 10,000. North Padre Island continues to be a key contributor, consistently ranking among the most active donation hubs.

One of the most meaningful moments each year comes after the boats have docked and the crowds have gone home, when the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots team arrives to collect the community’s donations. Seeing the Marines load thousands of gifts gathered by island residents is a powerful reminder of the event’s purpose. The toys are then distributed to children and families across the Coastal Bend who might otherwise go without, turning a festive coastal celebration into a lifeline of holiday support.

The La Posada Boat Parade continues to be a reflection of everything that makes North Padre Island special: community, kindness, celebration, and the unmistakable spirit of coastal living. Lighted boats drifting through the canals capture the beauty of the island, but it’s the generosity behind the event that gives it its heart. As another holiday season approaches, residents are already preparing docks, planning boat themes, and gathering toys to help surpass last year’s collection efforts. The parade remains more than just a holiday event—it’s a testament to how this island comes together, year after year, to make the season brighter for everyone. And when the lights return to the water this December, they’ll shine with both celebration and purpose, illuminating the true spirit of North Padre Island.
